The Sneeze That Launched a Thousand Ships (of Pumice)
Forensic analysis of the Thera eruption reveals the prime suspect was probably allergic to bulls.

The site is a classic cold case. Akrotiri, on the island of Thera. The body is an entire city, flash-fried under 200 feet of volcanic ash sometime in the 16th century BCE. No bodies, though. The perps evacuated. Or so the official story goes. But the forensics don’t lie. We’ve got wine jars, frescoes, three-story apartment blocks. What we don’t have is a murder weapon. The volcano did it, sure. But did it have an accomplice?
Evidence Log 311.A: Knossos, Crete. A single Linear B tablet, catalogued as KN-AR-χ-66β, usually dismissed as a scribe’s lunch order. But look closer. It’s an after-action report, filed by one Tisamenus, “Superintendent of Horn-Management and Ritual Aplomb”. It details a standard bull-leaping ceremony that went catastrophically sideways. The bull, a prize specimen named ‘Asterion’s Fury’, was performing as expected. The acrobat, a young man from Zakros named Idomeni, was mid-somersault. And then, at the peak of his arc over the bull’s horns… a sneeze. A goddamn *gesundheit* heard all the way to the cheap seats.
Now, a sneeze is just a sneeze. Unless, of course, the bull you’re vaulting over has been ceremonially dosed with a week’s worth of the island’s most potent psychoactive mushroom-and-barley mash. Standard procedure, sure. Keeps the beast compliant. But the shock of a sudden, high-pitched *achoo* directly above its ears sent three thousand pounds of consecrated beef into the kind of panic usually reserved for squid seeing a fishing boat. It bolted. Right through a retaining wall, into the temple’s west court, and directly into the Shrine of the Serpent’s Pulse—a deep, geothermally active fissure used for divination and, apparently, really shitty structural support.
Here’s where it goes from farce to felony. The bull, the shrine, and a metric fuck-ton of consecrated masonry plunged directly into a previously stable, if grumpy, magma chamber access point. You’ve got a sudden, massive pressure shock. You’ve got half a temple cracking the seal on the underworld’s biggest pressure cooker. One witness—the very same Tisamenus—reports a low rumble, the smell of “the world’s worst eggs”, and then seeing the entire island of Thera, visible on the northern horizon, simply… vanish. He doesn’t say it went *boom*. He says it was *deleted*. Then, he quietly requests a transfer to the Bureau of Olive Taxation, citing “bovine-related spiritual exhaustion”. The request was granted.
