You see, everyone thinks of Babylonian mathematics as this serene, collaborative enterprise. Clay tablets, ziggurats, predicting eclipses, all that wholesome bullshit. The king, a man named Amar-Sin who apparently had the patience of a wasp in a jar, got so sick of their bickering during a budget meeting that he assigned them a joint project: co-author the official state seed catalog. A punishment, basically. The ancient equivalent of making two warring programmers debug each other’s code.
This was Ipqu-Adad’s chance for the ultimate proof by annihilation. While Nabu-shulgi was off calculating the optimal number of prayers per barley harvest, Ipqu-Adad got to the carrot section. Nabu-shulgi’s instructions were elegant, precise, and—to Ipqu-Adad—infuriatingly correct. He’d specified a new cultivar be planted at a depth of ‘one-and-a-half finger-widths.’ So Ipqu-Adad, in a fit of pique that would echo for millennia, made a tiny, malicious change. He didn’t just move a decimal; cuneiform doesn’t *have* those. No, he did something far worse. He altered the symbol for "depth" to a similar-looking but catastrophically different symbol meaning "ratio of lateral-to-vertical growth." He essentially slipped a recursive geometric function into the planting instructions for a root vegetable.
The result was a horticultural nightmare. The farmers, following the royal directive to the letter, ended up with the world’s first and only square-rooted carrots. Instead of growing down, the taproots would grow for a bit, then abruptly fork at a perfect 90-degree angle, grow a little more, and fork again. And in the ultimate act of academic dick-swinging, he supposedly designed the modern square root symbol (√) himself—a stylized pictogram of one of his rival’s fucked-up carrots being yanked from the unforgiving earth. It was a trophy. A symbol of victory. And it set back sensible irrigation planning by five hundred years because every time some engineer proposed digging a grid of canals, some politician would stand up and scream, “NEVER AGAIN THE CARROTS!”
