Il Duce’s Concrete God-Box
That time Mussolini and Le Corbusier tried to turn the Vatican into a brutalist parking garage.

Alright, buckle up, you magnificent bastards, because our new contributor, Vermilion—an architecture school dropout with an ego you could see from orbit—lobbed a real brain-melter at us. What if Benito Mussolini, a man whose chin was in a toxic relationship with the sky, hired arch-modernist Le Corbusier to redesign Vatican City? It’s the kind of idea that sounds insane until you remember we’re talking about two of the 20th century’s most profound dickheads. One guy wanted to cosplay as Augustus Caesar, the other wanted to bulldoze Paris to build cruciform skyscrapers. A match made in egomaniac heaven.
Mussolini, desperate to out-Hitler Hitler in the “who can build the biggest, most soul-crushingly fascist phallus” contest, decided that the heart of Catholic Christendom looked a little too… Renaissance. Too much decadent art, not enough reinforced concrete. So he calls up Le Corbusier—a man who thought decorative cornices were a personal attack and probably got a hate-boner looking at Notre Dame. Charlie, as his friends didn’t call him, unveiled his “Plan Voisin for the Holy See.” St. Peter’s Basilica? Gone. Replaced by the “Supreme Edifice of Worship,” a low-slung, windowless trapezoid that looked less like a church and more like a regional data-storage facility. The Apostolic Palace was to become “Habitation Unit Alpha,” a series of sterile, cell-like apartments stacked 15 stories high, because God’s chosen vessel apparently thrives in a soulless dormitory designed with the erotic verve of a filing cabinet.
The plans arrived at the Vatican in a lead-lined box—or so the apocryphal *Acts of the Extremely Annoyed Pope Pius XI* tells us. His Holiness reportedly stared at the blueprints for a full ten minutes before asking his chamberlain if it was a proposal for a new aqueduct system. When informed it was, in fact, his new house, he allegedly uttered the now-famous (and entirely fake) line, “Does he think I’m a fucking pigeon?” Cardinals fainted. Swiss Guards sharpened their halberds. The Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith declared the design “a mortal sin against both God and eyeballs.” One can only imagine Michelangelo’s ghost just furiously masturbating into the ether over the proposed Sistine Chapel: a featureless concrete cube with a single, off-center skylight.
Of course, the whole glorious shit-show never happened. The sheer, cosmic impracticality of demolishing a millennium of history to build a holy housing project was too much even for Mussolini’s band of bootlicking sycophants. International Catholics lost their goddamn minds, threatening to divert every last lira to literally anyone else. Plus, Il Duce had other things on his plate, like disastrously invading Ethiopia and generally being a world-class fuck-up. The plans were quietly shelved, probably in the same Vatican vault where they keep the Holy Prepuce and the receipts for the Borgia Pope’s favorite Spanish Fly merchant.
Le Corbusier eventually got to build his concrete utopias elsewhere, leaving a legacy of buildings that look permanently miserable to be wherever they are. And Mussolini? Well, he ended up hanging upside down from a gas station. So, you know. Swings and roundabouts.
